Top 5 Tips to Deal With Slow PC Performance

Slow PC performance is inevitable if you use your computer regularly. If you run Windows, use an Office program, or surf the ´Net, you will eventually run into slow downs. Your PC is simply performing under the natural law of entropy: all matter will inevitably wear out sometime!

Just as your hardware WILL suffer from use over time, your operating system WILL run slower. A major reason for slow PC performance is that installing/uninstalling applications leaves file fragments in your registry, which is the database for all the options and settings of your PC.

Your registry can be so bogged down by old, useless, duplicate files (not to mention spyware and viruses) that your operating system can slow down, grow unstable, and even frequently (ultimately!) crash.

But you don´t have to suffer if you know how to take care of your PC. Following are some of the things you can do to speed up PC performance.
  1. Perform regular virus checks.
If you surf the Web regularly but don´t do periodic virus scans, you´re asking for trouble. Simply visiting a website or subscribing to an e-zine can download viruses into your PC without your knowing. And if you frequently download files off the Internet (programs, music, video clips, etc.), the chance of infecting your PC increases.

  2. Use your System Tools.
Before you even consider buying all sorts of PC maintenance software online, you should try making use of the System Tools that come free with your system. For example, Windows has Disk Defragmenter, which deals with file fragments and can rearrange your program files so that your applications start faster. Disk Cleanup can help you rid your PC of files you don´t use and Scan Disk can check your hard drive for errors.

  3. Be picky about downloads.
It´s so tempting to bum stuff free off the Web isn´t it? But many sites that offer free stuff will secretly install spyware into your PC to track your computer activity. Some may even generate unwanted pop-ups that can slow PC performance. Others will secretly write programs to your browser or registry that will not only slow you down but also eventually crash your PC. So before you download that next free screensaver program, think twice. Is it worth the risk?

  4. Troubleshoot errors as they occur.
Did you know that 94% of all PCs have corrupt or potentially harmful files with at least 200 errors? If an error message pops up on your screen, don´t just ignore it. It may not only slow PC performance down, causing you to reboot and repeat your work, but it can be a sign of a potentially fatal error. If you see a Regsvr32.exe error, for instance, don´t just reboot and forget about it. Visit the Microsoft technical support page, type in the name of the error, and follow the step-by-step process until you solve the problem.

  5. Use a registry cleaner.
One of the easiest, non-technical ways, to deal with slow PC performance is to regularly run a top-notch registry cleaner such as RegCure. Running it can deal with multiple types of errors simultaneously. The end result: your PC will run as fast as when it was new!
