Registry Cleaners – Keeping Instructions Simple

You might not be aware of its existence, but the Windows registry is a very important component of your operating system. It is a database that contains configuration settings about the user’s preferences with regard to the way things go about in his computer. It also contains details about the various applications and hardware components installed in your computer.

The Problem Starts Here

Newly purchased systems are often free from any type of registry problem. This is due to the fact that there are only few applications contained therein. However, the contents of the registry become long and complicated as the user installs, modifies, or deletes programs. The clutter or fragmentation of instructions could confuse the system and eventually result into errors that are sometimes fatal. Nearly every system problem, or about 85% thereof, can be attributed to an error in the registry. Registry dilemmas are usually caused by the frequent installation and removal of programs, especially incomplete software deletion.

Do I Need a Registry Cleaner?

Whether or not you need a registry cleaner depends on the activities that you do on your computer. If you always install and uninstall games, photo-editing programs, or antivirus applications, then you should consider investing in a registry cleaner. This program would also come in handy if you frequently receive software updates or patches on the Internet.

If you do decide to purchase a registry cleaner, make sure to browse through a number of brands and compare them. All of them are constituted for the same purpose, but their performance or extra functions vary.

What to Do With It

As with most system utilities, a registry cleaner practically needs no human input in order to get things done. All you have to do is install and run it. The process involves just three simple steps.
  • Back up your registry.

Having your registry damaged either through unauthorized malware intrusion or through negligent modification by the user can be apocalyptic for your computer. Keep in mind that the Windows registry keeps many things in place in your operating system. Hence, an erroneously-altered registry could result into a system crash or boot up failure. In order to avert this disaster, it is strenuously advised that you back up your registry. You can do this by choosing Start • Run, then type regedit. Click on File • Export, then type in the file name and destination. Save the file on any removable media, such as a CD or a floppy disk.

Save the file using the .reg format as other extensions are not imported in case the registry becomes corrupt.

  • Clean your registry.

Of course, this is the most important part of the procedure. A cluttered or fragmented registry can result in a longer start up time, as well as pull overall system performance down. Windows once featured a registry cleaner. However, Microsoft removed it from their operating system starting in Windows 98. Hence, users were forced to buy third-party registry cleaners after the release of Windows 95´s successor.

  • Repair your registry if damaged.

If a malicious program has messed up your registry, all you have to do is restore your computer´s setting to an earlier time. You can do this by clicking Start • All Programs • Accessories • System Tools • System Restore. Select the option that would allow you to restore your computer’s settings to a particular date. Click on Next then choose a restore point by clicking the date and choosing the restore point from a calendar. Click Next again.

It´s not enough that you keep your computer free from any type of malware. You also have to make sure that all its components are free from clutter or unnecessary burden. This is especially true with registry cleaners as it could easily bloat up from instructions that are not needed anymore. A leaner registry means a faster PC.
