Programs Not Responding – Troubleshooting Tips

Programs Not Responding error messages are not always triggered by problems with your programs or applications. They can also be triggered by a bad program or device driver or a hardware defect.

Following are some of the top reasons that trigger Program Not Responding messages.
  1. You tried to run too many applications at the same time.

  2. You don´t have enough RAM (computer memory) to support the programs you opened.

  3. The application you tried is badly configured or corrupted.

  4. Your PC is infected with a virus.

  5. The data on your hard drive is too fragmented or scattered.

  6. A device driver is failing or corrupted.

  7. It may be the effect of wrong temperature levels.

Following are steps you can take to minimize the chances of getting a Programs Not Responding message.

Use Task Manager

Hit CTRL+AL+DEL to verify exactly how many programs are running. Sometimes a website you visited may have an embedded program that automatically downloads into the PCs of site visitors. It may be running in the background causing Programs Not Responding messages to turn up.

Also try to hit Start > Run and then type “msconfig.” Deselect the box that loads startup items and reboot. If this doesn´t work, try to run an adware or spyware program.

Run an Antivirus Tool

When you notice frequent error messages it makes good sense to run a virus scan first thing. You can try scanning the program first. This is especially true if the application is some freeware you downloaded free off the Web to try out. It can also mean that malware has found its way into your system.

Perform regular deep scans. Also, update you virus definitions regularly. Your Antivirus tool is only as good as the number of viruses it recognizes and new malware gets written everyday.

Check Your System Resources

Remember to maintain enough free space in two places: your hard disk and your RAM. Relieve your hard disk of unnecessary files, such as those in your Temp folders or IE cache. Empty your Recycle Bin. Use no more than 80% of RAM at any given time.

Use your System Tools to scan, clean, and defragment your hard drive. Then run Windows Update.

Clean Your Windows Registry

If you´ve been using your PC for some time, your Windows Registry may be laden with files left over from your many installs and uninstalls as well stray files from the programs you use.

So Program Not Responding messages can mean that your PC is so bogged down by misplaced or corrupted files that it has become ridden with errors, making your programs cease to function.

Warning: If you try to fix the problem manually by accessing your Windows Registry it could cause irreparable damage to your PC.

The safest way to deal with a cluttered registry is to run a reliable registry cleaner, such as RegCure. By using a registry cleaner, you don't have to wade through old files and try to assess whether your system would still need each one.

What´s more, a registry cleaner will not only effectively deal with Program Is Not Responding messages but with other errors that plague your PC as well.
