PC Cleaning – Think Outside the Box

Cleaning the interior of your computer is important to keep it working properly. Still, the exterior is not to be neglected as it also contributes to the overall performance of your PC. Know how to keep it sparklingly clean to be assured of a crash-free PC.

Why Clean The Computer?

During its lifetime, the computer is exposed to a wide range of contaminants like dust, dirt, hairs, smoke and grime. As more and more of these are accumulated, problems like overheating, system crashes and hardware failures become a common occurrence. Not only is it annoying, it can also be costly if left unchecked.

You may ask how dust and grime cause severe system problems. Corrosion and overheating! The accumulated dirt in the different parts of the computer cakes and restricts the release of heat away from the hardware. This trapped heat is stuck in parts such as the motherboard and causes severe damage to the delicate chips and circuits. Chips that have been corroded are unable to process data properly which causes system interruptions and worse, complete system crash and loss of important data.

How Dust and Grime Get Inside Your PC

The PC and its monitor generate a field of static electricity that literally sucks in dust and other corrosive materials. Another component that further aggravates this problem is the computer fan. Designed to dispel heat generated by the computer, it worsens the problem by creating a vacuum that attracts more dust inside. It may even blow dust towards the interior of the computer.

Clean and Green

Before you begin cleaning, make sure that nothing will pose needless danger to your computer like direct sunlight and other heat sources. Place it in a dry place free from possible contaminants like dust-filled bookcases or plants. Make sure to have it unplugged before attempting to proceed cleaning. There is no point in getting electrocuted for no reason :)

Be sure to prepare all the needed materials prior to cleaning like a can of compressed air, lint-free cloth, tweezers, glass cleaner, water and an anti-static wrist strap. The most common parts that you will be cleaning include:
  • the case

  • mouse

  • keyboard

  • monitor

  • surge protector and other cable connections

  • CD and DVD media

Be careful and be tidy when it comes to your PC and it will serve you a LONG time!
