How to Tweak Your PC´s BIOS Settings to Improve PC Performance

The Basic Input/Output System (BIOS) is software that is tasked with starting up the computer. Its primary function is to perform a Power-On Self Test (POST) to check if all hardware attached are working which include the chipset, memory hard drive, video card and others. Its settings can be configured by the user to meet his particular needs, especially the boot sequence – with a choice of booting the hard drive, CD or floppy disk first. Knowing how to tweak your PC´s BIOS settings is important to be assured of improved PC performance.

Take note, however, that before you proceed with making changes in the computer´s BIOS, make sure that you have fully understood how to perform the task. You may inadvertently do more harm than good if you make the wrong moves. If you are in doubt, exit the BIOS Setup without saving any changes made and start all over.

Simple Tweaks for Your BIOS Settings

  1. Disable Unused Ports. Every time you turn on the computer, BIOS scans every port on the main board to check for all attached devices. Most of these ports do not have anything on it but they still are checked by BIOS. This results to a prolonged boot time and diminished performance. To address this problem, you can go to your BIOS Setup and change its setting to Disabled. You can always turn it back on to Auto if you install new hardware to have them detected accordingly.

  2. Regular Backup. It is always a good idea to make an updated backup of your BIOS. Trouble comes when you least expect it so it is wise to have a contingency should the worse happen. There will be instances when the BIOS in your computer´s main board gets corrupted resulting to a malfunctioning PC. Should this happen, you can overwrite the busted version of the BIOS with the updated backup. You can also use this backup if you have accidentally saved erroneous tweaks in the BIOS Setup.

  3. Turn-Off Built-In Features. Today´s motherboards usually come with components integrated into the board. Included here are different cards like video, sound, network and RAID cards. These components eat up your computer´s system resources and may cause poor performance especially if they are rarely or not used at all. You can disable it in the BIOS Setup if they are not used to save up on needed system resources.

  4. Set a Password. If there other users of the PC, you may choose to setup a supervisor password to prevent them from making intentional or unintentional changes in the BIOS Settings. This is to make sure that only you can make configuration changes in the BIOS program. If worse turns to worst, you can also set a user password to totally prevent anyone from using your computer.

  5. Keep it Updated.Perform regular updates of your main board´s BIOS to ensure stable PC operations. Makers of motherboards perform regular releases of new BIOS versions that you can write over your current and older version.

  6. Remote Connection. If you are usually hitting the road with your laptop, you can configure the motherboard’s BIOS to allow you to remotely access your home computer. Simply change the setting in the BIOS where the computer will respond to an external modem act. All you need is a telephone connection to enable access to your desktop computer.
The overall performance of your PC depends on how efficiently it allocates needed resources. The motherboard´s BIOS does just that and it is essential that it be properly configured and updated to help it perform its function well. Be a wise PC owner by knowing how to perform these to enjoy improved PC performance.
