Firewalls – Your Computer´s “Iron Curtain” Against Free-Roaming Malware

A firewall is a security system or device that sorts out all data that go in and out of your system and prevents the intrusion of malicious programs. It can be either software or hardware-based, but functions just the same as the primary regulator of files and other data that comes to and from the Internet.

Firewalls – How Important Are They?

Your system´s firewall is its first line of defense against unwarranted attacks by different malware coming from the Internet. Without it, any hacker or program could easily go in and out of your computer. The intrusions are mostly malicious and often leave your system damaged. Hence, it is an indispensable component regardless of the type of system or Internet connection that you may have. While it can forestall various attacks from the Web, it cannot effectively defend your PC from all kinds of threats without the help of other security software, such as antivirus or anti-spyware programs.

How Does a Firewall Function?

While a firewall mainly sorts out information that goes in and out of your computer, it performs other functions as well that enables your system to fend for itself against malicious intrusions. The first thing that it does when it detects a potential threat is to alert the user. It can either automatically block or eliminate the danger, or allow the user to exercise several options on how he wants to deal with it.

Firewalls also constantly monitor the files in the system, checking for any unauthorized alteration in the data. If it detects a suspicious or unusual change, it will either quarantine the infected file or block the execution of the modified program. The user will also be notified of the detection and will be given options on how to deal with the situation.

This security device could also hide your system from hackers or malware by making it virtually invisible to them. If its cloaking function or stealth settings have been compromised or detected, it could still fend off any threat by blocking any unauthorized request for an access to your computer.

Firewalls – Hard or Soft

As had been earlier said, firewalls can either be hardware or software-based. Those belonging in the first category are external devices that are placed between a computer and the network connection. They fend off attacks very efficiently, especially since they work separately from the unit that they´re protecting and use their own resources.

On the other hand, software-based firewalls are those featured or included in various programs that regulate the functions of the PC, such as operating systems. There are also third-party firewall software that could replace or complement that of Window’s or OS X´s. Although they´re an effective tool against external threats from the Internet, they´re not as reliable and efficient as their hardware-based counterparts.

What are My Options?

There are two ways by which you could protect your system through personal firewalls. The first is by using the one that comes with the operating system. Vista already has a ready-built one. However, if you´re using Windows XP, you have to download Service Pack 2 in order to take advantage of its security suite.

If you want dedicated software for the job, try using a third-party firewall. Many of these programs provide a two-way protection, screening both incoming and outgoing data. This feature makes them more reliable than their OS-based counterparts as the latter only scans incoming files.

Overkill Can Kill

We all aspire for a malware-free PC. It´s therefore important to take all precautionary measures, such as the installation of the necessary security suites. However, as with all things, too much of something can be harmful. Avoid using two firewalls on the same connection as this can cause annoying disruptions on your Internet access.
