Adware – Apocaplytic Advertisements

Adware is software that presents various advertisements to the user. It usually gets installed, along with other programs, when the user clicks on the ads displayed on the Web pages. It could also infiltrate a computer stealthily with the help of ActiveX controls. Adware can be employed to collect the user’s personal information, aside from displaying a variety of advertisements. They are mainly used to study the user´s Web-surfing habits, including information was to what he frequently buys online. It also captures sensitive information, such as usernames and passwords.

Adware – How Did I Get Infected?

The common cause of Adware infection is the installation by the user of software downloaded from the Internet without reading the End User License Agreement (EULA). They also provide a path for other spyware, like Trojans and viruses. They can even install a wide range of DLLs and other executable files that could facilitate the transfer of various data to many marketing sites. Some of them can even execute independently and update themselves along with authorization capabilities. It’s very difficult to get rid of them as they leave residual components after deletion which could bring about their reinstallation.

Consumers vs. Advertisers

There´s no doubt that the best way to stop adware infection is to be cautious whenever surfing the Web. It is also important to download useful system tools, such as an adware remover and adware blocker in order to stem the proliferation of these unwanted applications.

Here are some helpful tips that could assist you in the removal of adware:
  • Perform the adware removal process in safe mode by pressing the F8 key while the system is booting.

  • Some adware change their extentions to .com or .exe so that they could run before any other program. As adware removal tools only disable the program, it leaves a possibility for the reinstallation of the unwanted software. It´s therefore advisable to check file extension modifications. To do this, click on My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > File Types, then check for any modified .com or .exe entries. Seek the help of a software professional before going through with any modification.

You can prevent adware by:
  • Making sure that any program does not get automatically installed from the Internet or through e-mails. This can be achieved by increasing the security level of your browser.

  • Keeping your operating system updated and patched to protect your system from any security vulnerability. Immediately install all patches that are marked critical.

  • Making use of a firewall to keep yourself aware of applications that try to access the Internet. A firewall could also prompt you if any application downloads and installs itself into your system without your permission. Don´t just click “yes” or “no” while downloading or performing any process on the Internet without checking it out.

  • Reading and understanding the end user license agreement before proceeding with the download and installation.

As adware authors are constantly revising their creations to make them more immune to detection and removal, users are advised to always be very careful when roaming around in cyberspace. While users are considered to be the first and best line of defense against adware infestation, adware removal and blocking tools, as well as firewalls, are also indispensable in fighting against these unwanted software.
