Does your computer spend a lot of time loading software applications such as Excel, Word, or any other commonly used program? There are some PCs which do take their time in loading and running software. There are many reasons why your computer seems to be oblivious of time whenever it processes the instructions that you give it. Here are the 10 most probable reasons why your PC is such a slow-poke.
- Spyware – Considered as one of the usual suspects in PC slowdowns, spyware are malicious programs that install themselves stealthily into your unit and carry out activities which could greatly affect system performance.
- Installation of many programs with startup option – As you install different types of programs in your system, some of them may take up start-up status discreetly. This results in slower boot up times as all of them take up main memory for initialization.
- Corruption of windows registry – The registry is regarded as the master control center of the operating system and all the applications that it executes. Thus, any damage to this Windows component leads to a variety of performance problems, such as slow start up and shut down times. An infected or maliciously-altered registry also causes the erroneous execution or interruption of several processes that the OS undertakes.
- Fragmented memory – It is desirable for related files to be located in one particular and contiguous location in your hard drive. Unfortunately, this is not usually possible, especially if you frequently save and delete data in your computer. As a consequence, it will take a longer time for file searches to be accomplished.
- Security software – Some security software also contribute to the slowdown of your PC. These applications occupy a considerable portion of your system´s main memory, and its constant monitoring of all activities in your computer greatly taxes the processor. Security programs are indispensable PC tools. Unfortunately, they also cause some problems as far as system performance is concerned.
- Improper removal of programs – It takes more than just deleting files in order to remove applications completely. If this is done carelessly or erroneously, then some files could be missed out or the windows registry might not get updated accordingly. Thus, system performance suffers because the registry will still execute instructions for the deleted programs, while the hard drive gets cluttered by needless remnants.
- Size of the page file – This is the temporary working area in the memory used by the PC for processing various functions. It can be regarded as a buffer used by the operating system. Thus, poor system performance and stability would result if you would allocate only a small portion of your computer´s memory for this purpose..
- Too many windows – Too many windows on your desktop or hundreds of files from the Internet in the temporary folder also make computers slow.
- Viruses– These are programs intended to execute malicious processes and cause irreparable damage to computers. They are usually the culprits in almost all system slowdowns and shutdowns.
- Hardware problems – Poor component maintenance also causes crashes and laggard PC performance. Hardware problems are usually caused by the accumulation of dust, wear and tear, and overheating.
